Canadian Agricultural Literacy Month (CALM)

Bring agriculture to life in your classroom every March with Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM). This year, after two years of pandemic disruptions, we are pleased to be offering in-class visits from a farmer or agriculture professional, a hands-on agriculture activity and an agriculture themed book for your classroom. Your students will build stronger connections to the food they eat and develop a deeper appreciation for the role agriculture plays in their lives, at the same time engaging with curricular outcomes.

Who: Grade 2, 3 and 4 students (Outside these grades? Check out our other programs and resources.)
When: March 2023
Where: Your classroom
How: We match you with a volunteer and you arrange a date and time with your volunteer in March for your presentation
Time: 45-60 minutes
Cost: Free
Registration: Closed

For 2022, all teachers received a:

Book: grade-appropriate and focused on building agricultural literacy (FR/EN)
Activities:
- Food Loss & Waste. Follow food from farm to plate and beyond with your students, learning about the impact of food waste and loss on food security and the environment. Discover what farmers and those in the agriculture industry do to reduce food loss and waste along this journey and explore food waste reduction at home and school. (FR/EN)
Teacher Guide: instructions and curricular connections to help you use the activities in your lessons. (EN)

New to AITC-M?

If you didn't participate in CALM 2022 or Follow the Farmers this fall, you will need to first create a teacher profile when you go to register for CALM. Once you have a profile, you will be able to register for CALM. Save your username and password to register for all our programs.
