Programs & Field Trips

Our flagship programs and field trips for teachers and students turn agriculture education into a hands-on adventure.

Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM)

Mois de la littératie agricole canadienne (MLAC)

Volunteer with students during Canadian Agricultural Literacy Month

Bring agriculture to life in your classroom every March with Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM). Receive an in-class visit from a farmer or agriculture professional, a hands-on agriculture activity and an agriculture themed book for your classroom. Your students will build stronger connections to the food they eat and develop a deeper appreciation for the role agriculture plays in their lives — at the same time engaging with curricular outcomes.

Who: Grade 2, 3 and 4 students (Outside these grades? Check out our other programs and resources.)
When: March 2026
Where: Your classroom
How: We match you with a volunteer and you arrange a date and time with your volunteer in March for your presentation
Time: 60 minutes
Cost: Free

Registration will open November 14, 2025!

*If your classroom is located in a remote location where there are no volunteers available for an in-person visit, we will arrange a virtual visit for you.

*Les visites virtuelles de bénévoles francophones sont disponibles mais ne sont pas garanties (selon la disponibilité des bénévoles).

*We can match volunteer presentations to home school associations but not individual families.

For 2026, all teachers receive a:

  • Book (EN/FR): TBD

  • Activity (EN/FR):  Match the Commodity – Animal Edition (EN/FR).
Where does our food come from? Where do many of our household products come from? When asked this question, many people would say “the grocery store.” While shopping, we grab products off the shelf and don’t take the time to think about where they came from. Livestock not only provides us with healthy food, but also many products that we use every day. Few of us wash our faces, moisturize our hands, light a candle, or toss a football and think about the animals and processes that helped to get that product into our home. In Match the Commodity - Animal Edition, students will be exploring animal by-products and learning how they are incorporated in many different, everyday household products.

  • Teacher Guide (EN/FR):Livestock/animals provide us with healthy food, and they also provide us with countless by-products that we use everyday. The Match the Commodity – Animal Edition resource is taking that food connection one step further, providing you with a hands-on way of connecting your students to all the by-products animals provide, many of which they use every day. In this guide, you will find Manitoba curriculum connections for Grades 2 6, and suggestions on how to use the materials in the kit to best meet Manitoba learning outcomes.

I have taken for granted that kids know about agriculture just because my family and I do. This program is essential!

My students were fully engaged. They asked a million questions and our volunteer was more than happy to answer.

CALM is made possible thanks to financial support from Agriculture in the Classroom Canada and Cargill
