Ag Careers Being Explored by Senior Students

(Souris, MB February 10, 2014) – Agriculture in the Classroom-MB Inc. and the Southwest Horizons School Division will host the first ever Agriculture Industry and Career Day on February 12th in Souris, Manitoba.

Approximately 80 high school students will be bused in from across the division to gather at the Souris Glenwood Memorial Complex Community Hall for a full day of experiencing agriculture and hands-on learning. Focusing on the dynamic agriculture industry, students will experience the many exciting and diverse careers that are available, while hearing the real stories from some of those involved.

“We are excited to be able to deliver this new program with Southwest Horizons School Division,” stated Johanne Ross, AITC-M Executive Director. “Any experiential programming we can offer high school students just adds to AITC-M’s efforts to inspire young students to get curious about a career in agriculture. By letting them get up close and personal with other young people who love this industry, we may just open their eyes to opportunities they never considered before!”
The students will take part in an introductory session focusing on the diverse careers in agriculture and then will rotate through six interactive stations throughout the bulk of the day. The stations will be centered around six different agriculture themes including: grain grading, canola, beef production, farm business planning, the hemp industry and post secondary education in agriculture. Students will be encouraged to tweet out their experiences throughout the day under the hash tag #agcareers.

The lucky students will bring their appetites for agriculture information, experiencing some of what the industry has to offer while enjoying made in Manitoba food throughout the day. Students will realize throughout the session that every day we eat, wear, drive, or touch a piece of agriculture. Richardson Pioneer and Manitoba Pork Council are proud sponsors.

Agriculture in the Classroom- Manitoba Inc. is a non-profit organization supported by individuals and the agriculture industry.
